While the client meticulously picture-boarded every inch of what they wanted in their home, Sheldon was responsible for bringing their vision to life.

“My job was to look through their eyes, and discover their taste and build the home to what they felt it should be,” Sulman says. “I am able to visualize and communicate that vision to the client, and most importantly to the people doing the work.”

Being on site every day helps, too, and is a testament to Sulman’s commitment to his clients.

“He is not just a builder, he is really into the design aspects,” the client says. “He actually drove to Toronto one day to meet face-to-face with the person who did the plaster mouldings and brought the different mouldings here for us to see. None of the builders we have worked with ever went to that much trouble.”

The result is a home that flows, with every detail creating a sense of continuity – essential to any home Sheldon builds.

“One of the important things in my job is to create continuity of the eye,” Sheldon says.

“I have been in many houses where something doesn’t flow and your eye goes straight to it, and that’s a mistake. When you are doing things with continuity and quality, there is no wrong, there is only right.

“The client and I did a lot of talking and a lot of seeing, we looked at the proper design principles, and it was done in a quality way. This house is absolutely them, and it’s wonderful.

Sheldon Sulman’s tips for building your dream home

1 Have a clear vision of what you want. Think about, research it, picture board it. The clearer your vision, the more easily it can be communicated to the team working on your build.
